Healthy Lifestyles campaign moved into action on March 15th

One of the most talked about and anticipated Government campaigns under the Ministry of Health took place with two massive launches on March 15th, 2008 in Grand Turk and Providenciales.

The Healthy Lifestyles Campaign began in Grand Turk on Saturday March 15th  at 6 a.m. with an official launch by the Minister of Health Hon. Dr. Lillian Boyce and speakers from some of the national health organisations.

The events in Grand Turk, Salt Cay, North and South Caicos and Providenciales were well supported.  In the style of a health fair the launch featured a gym with instructors giving exercise tips, vendors selling nutritionists approved foods, a physical demonstration by the scouts, blood pressure checks by registered nurses and a wealth of information and demonstrations from various health organisations across the island.

The campaign was launched in an effort to encourage residents on island to be more cognizant of their health and to practice healthier living. This included regular check-ups, regular exercise and the practice of a healthy and nutritious diet.

Meetings with the Ministry of Health, The Minister, and NGO’s, principals of schools in Grand Turk and Providenciales, and restaurants resulted in various partnerships and support for the initiative.

The Healthy Lifestyles campaign was endorsed by the PNP government and fulfils one of their manifesto promises. The PNP administration in its manifesto mandated the Minister of Health to promote healthy lifestyle and to start a health promotion unit within the Ministry of Health.

The Manifesto also encouraged partnerships with the National Cancer Society, Cancer Foundation, Kidney Foundation, AIDS Foundation, Heart Foundation and all of the various health organisations and NGO’s.

“The Ministry has done a great job working hard on this initiative and the policy is ready and we will be presenting to it you shortly. This initiative is going to change the lives of our people throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands. We sometimes think about eating right, exercising and portions, but I am thinking about also the substances that we consume into our bodies that are not good for us such as drugs, alcohol, unprotected sex, crime and violence and I am thinking of these things also.”- Lillian Boyce (2008)
